Both the Lafayette and Iberia Chambers of Commerce Recognize the Role of Delcambre Direct

The Lafayette Chamber of Commerce recently recognized the Twin Parish Port Regional Economic Development Initiatives with the 2012 Acadiana Innovation Award for the public sector.

According to the Chamber news release, the Twin Parish Port Initiatives were chosen for several reasons:

“In the aftermath of the 2005 hurricane season, the town of Delcambre has emerged as a model of community resilience and redevelopment. The Port of Delcambre adopted the vision of Dr. Rod Emmer from Louisiana Sea Grant and embraced regionalism shortly after Hurricane Rita. By working with Dr. Tom Sammons in architecture at UL, Thomas Hymel with Louisiana Sea Grant, the LSU landscape architecture program, and Dr. Geoffrey Stewart from Marketing in the Moody College at UL, the Port of Delcambre has modernized.

The Port created a web-based seafood market called "Delcambre Direct” that links a regional consumer market with local fishermen. It also constructed a new 28 boat marina in the heart of Delcambre.”

The Greater Iberia Chamber of Commerce also recognized Delcambre Direct Seafood with the award for Economic Innovation.

Better-webs is proud to partner with LSU Ag Center and Sea Grant on the Louisiana Direct Seafood project, with Delcambre Direct as the model for ports around the State. The web-based marketplace allows consumers to view Fresh Catch messages from local fishermen in real time, so they know what is fresh on the dock. Consumers can also contact the fishermen directly to place orders for fresh, wild-caught shrimp and other seafood.

Delcambre — By passing the Oct. 17 property tax, Iberia Parish and Vermilion Parish voters enabled the commissioners of the Twin Parish Port of Delcambre to jump-start an initiative to revitalize the local economy with the launching of a direct marketing campaign and seafood retail Web site on May 1.
The ad valorum millage — a 4 mill tax levied on property owners within the port district that straddles the Iberia-Vermilion parish line at Delcambre — will generate an estimated $303,238 in revenue over the next 10 years for the port.
The project includes converting the port’s northern pier into a marina, expanding the southern pier to accommodate around 50 boats and launching a direct marketing program and Web site on May 1 that will lead to the eventual establishment of an on-site seafood market.
